GMA in Functional Polymer Design
Glycidyl methacrylate combines a polymerisable methacrylate group with a reactive epoxide, enabling its incorporation into acrylic copolymers that retain latent crosslinking functionality. GMA-functional acrylic resins are the basis for epoxy-acrylic powder coatings, where carboxyl-capped polyesters crosslink with GMA units during stoving, replacing the toxicologically problematic TGIC crosslinker. GMA is also used as an adhesion promoter in coupling agents and as a reactive diluent.
Storage and Supply
GMA is a reactive monomer supplied inhibited and stored below 20 °C to prevent premature polymerisation. Terracore supplies in 25 kg and 200 kg drums. COA reports GMA assay (GC), epoxide equivalent, and inhibitor content. SDS provides storage requirements and PPE recommendations.
Applications
- Epoxy-functional acrylic resin synthesis
- TGIC-free powder coating binders
- Adhesion promoter for glass and metals
- Reactive impact modifier for engineering plastics
- Crosslinkable coating and ink systems
- Specialty copolymer synthesis
