CAB Resin in Coatings and Films
Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) is a mixed ester of cellulose in which hydroxyl groups are partially substituted with acetyl and butyryl groups. The balance of these substituents determines the resin glass transition temperature, solubility, viscosity, and film clarity. CAB resins are valued in premium woodfinish lacquers for their exceptional clarity, outdoor durability, and compatibility with polyurethane, acrylic, and nitrocellulose binders. They are also used as film-forming agents in slow-release coatings for agricultural fertilizers.
Grades Available
Terracore offers CAB in a range of butyryl content levels (17–52%) and solution viscosities to match different coating and moulding requirements. Material is supplied in 25 kg lined craft-paper bags. Grade-specific COA (viscosity, hydroxyl value, DS) and SDS are provided.
Applications
- High-clarity lacquers and wood coatings
- Printing inks and overprint varnishes
- Optical and instrument lenses
- Outdoor-durable coatings
- Thermoplastic injection moulding
- Traffic paints and road markings
