What Is Sodium Formate?

Sodium formate (HCOONa) is the sodium salt of formic acid — a white, odourless crystalline powder that is freely soluble in water and has a nearly neutral to mildly alkaline pH in solution. It combines the reducing character of the formate ion with the stability of a sodium salt, making it safer and easier to handle than formic acid while retaining reactivity as a pH buffer, reducing agent, and chrome-complex modifier in several key industrial processes.

Leather Tanning & Chrome Processes

Sodium formate’s largest application is in the leather tanning industry, where it functions as a masking agent and pH regulator in chrome tanning baths. By forming stable complexes with chromium(III) ions, it controls the rate of chrome fixation, preventing over-tanning and producing uniformly penetrated, soft, plump leather. It is used to prick up the pH at the end of chrome tanning to fix residual chrome and improve exhaustion. This use is widespread in South African and global leather processing operations.

De-icing & Anti-icing Applications

Sodium formate is used as an environmentally preferred de-icing agent and anti-icer for airfield runways, taxiways, and aprons, as well as for road de-icing in environmentally sensitive areas. It is biodegradable, has low toxicity to aquatic organisms, and causes significantly less corrosion to concrete, metals, and airframe materials than chloride-based de-icers. Airfield-grade sodium formate complies with AMS 1431 and AMS 1435 specifications for solid and liquid runway de-icers.

Chemical Synthesis & Reducing Agent

In chemical synthesis, sodium formate is used as a formyl group source (in the Leimgruber-Batcho synthesis and related reactions), as a reducing agent in the synthesis of palladium, platinum, and other noble metal nanoparticles, and as a formate shuttle in transfer hydrogenation reactions. It is used as a carbon source in the biological reduction of sulfate to sulfide in certain treatment processes. In the oil and gas industry, sodium formate is used as a component of high-density, non-corrosive completion brines.

Applications

  • Chrome leather tanning (masking agent)
  • Airport runway de-icing (AMS 1431)
  • Oil well completion brine
  • Noble metal nanoparticle synthesis
  • Transfer hydrogenation reducing agent
  • pH buffer in dyeing baths
  • Road de-icing (low-corrosion alternative)
