What Is Hydrogen Bromide (Hydrobromic Acid)?
Hydrogen bromide (HBr) is the diatomic inorganic acid formed by hydrogen and bromine. It is a colourless gas at room temperature that dissolves readily in water to form hydrobromic acid, typically supplied as 48% aqueous solution. HBr is a strong acid — fully dissociated in dilute aqueous solution — and a reactive source of bromide ions for chemical synthesis. Its gas form is used in semiconductor etching processes, while aqueous HBr is the reagent of choice for preparing a wide range of organic and inorganic bromide compounds.
Pharmaceutical & Organic Synthesis
Hydrobromic acid is an important reagent in pharmaceutical manufacturing for the preparation of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) hydrobromide salts, which improve the solubility, stability, and bioavailability of basic drug compounds. HBr is used to synthesise alkyl bromides from alcohols (via HBr addition), to cleave methyl ethers in natural product synthesis, and to prepare aryl bromides via reaction with diazonium salts. Many antihistamines, anaesthetics, and analgesics are formulated as hydrobromide salts.
Chemical Processing & Bromide Synthesis
HBr serves as the starting material for the production of inorganic bromide salts including sodium bromide, potassium bromide, calcium bromide, and ammonium bromide, as well as organic bromide intermediates. In the manufacture of flame retardants, brominated polymers, and specialty bromochemicals, hydrobromic acid is a key feedstock. It is used in gold extraction processes and in the preparation of bromide-based ionic liquids and catalysts.
Semiconductor Etching & Analytical Uses
Anhydrous HBr gas is used in semiconductor dry etching for silicon and III-V compound semiconductors, providing highly selective, anisotropic etching of silicon over silicon dioxide. In analytical chemistry, hydrobromic acid is used for digesting geological and metallic samples, for halide exchange reactions to prepare volatile analytes for chromatographic analysis, and in titrimetric methods for determining oxidants. It is also used in the production of photographic chemicals and as a catalyst in certain industrial reactions.
