What Is Stannous Chloride (Tin Chloride)?

Stannous chloride (SnCl₂), also called tin(II) chloride, is a white crystalline solid that functions as both a Lewis acid and a reducing agent. It is readily soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid and, when dissolved in water, partially hydrolyses to form basic tin compounds unless stabilised by excess acid. Its reducing power (Sn²⁺ → Sn⁴⁺) and the ability of tin to form organotin compounds give SnCl₂ wide utility in chemical synthesis, electroplating, and food chemistry.

Tin Electroplating & Surface Treatment

Stannous chloride is used in acid tin electroplating baths (e.g., stannous sulfate-based or methane sulfonate baths with SnCl₂ as the tin source) to deposit bright tin coatings on steel, copper, and brass substrates for corrosion protection and solderability. Tin plating is essential in the packaging industry (tin cans), electronics (component leads, PCB finishes), and for bearing surfaces. SnCl₂ is also used in the sensitisation step of electroless plating before activation with palladium chloride.

Chemical Reducing Agent & Synthesis

As a mild reducing agent, stannous chloride reduces aromatic nitro groups to amines, reduces diazonium salts, and converts iron(III) to iron(II). It is used in the synthesis of organotin compounds, as a stabiliser to prevent oxidation of citrus juices and canned foods, and as a preservative for certain pharmaceutical preparations. In glass manufacturing, SnCl₂ vapour is used to produce electrically conductive fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coatings on glass surfaces.

Food Additive & Textile Applications

Stannous chloride (E512) is approved as a food additive and antioxidant for use in canned asparagus and other tinned vegetables to prevent discolouration. In the textile industry it is used as a mordant to fix dyes to natural and synthetic fibres. It is also used in the production of blueprint paper, in the sensitisation of glass and plastic surfaces for electroless metal deposition, and as a catalyst in certain polymerisation reactions.
