What Is Methanesulfonic Acid?
Methanesulfonic Acid (MSA, CH₄O₃S) is the simplest alkanesulfonic acid — a colorless, viscous, odorless liquid that is miscible with water and highly soluble in polar organic solvents. It is a strong acid (pKa ~ −1.9) but, unlike halide-containing mineral acids, is non-oxidizing and environmentally benign. Biodegradable and with low vapor pressure, MSA has become the preferred electrolyte acid in tin and lead electroplating, displacing fluoroborate electrolytes in many applications.
Tin and Tin-Lead Electroplating
MSA-based electrolytes are the industry standard for depositing tin (Sn), lead (Pb), and tin-lead (Sn-Pb) alloys on electronic components, connectors, and PCB contact fingers. Methanesulfonate salts of tin and lead are highly soluble, enabling high-speed plating at elevated current densities with excellent deposit quality. MSA electrolytes operate over a wide pH range and produce fine-grained, adherent deposits with minimal brightener requirements.
Indium and Bismuth Plating
Beyond tin and lead, MSA is the preferred electrolyte acid for indium and bismuth plating applications — metals used in bearings, low-melting solders, and semiconductor packaging. The high solubility of indium and bismuth methanesulfonate salts, combined with MSA’s non-oxidizing nature, supports stable bath chemistry and consistent deposit quality.
Organic Synthesis and Pharmaceutical
Methanesulfonic Acid is a versatile Brønsted acid catalyst for esterification, alkylation, and rearrangement reactions in pharmaceutical and fine chemical synthesis. It is also used to form stable mesylate salts of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), improving solubility and bioavailability. In polymer chemistry, it is used as a solvent and catalyst for polyimide synthesis.
