What Is Hypophosphorous Acid?
Hypophosphorous Acid (H₃PO₂), also written as phosphinic acid, is a monobasic acid in which phosphorus is in the +1 oxidation state. It is a strong reducing agent — significantly more powerful than its phosphite and phosphate counterparts — and is commercially available as a 50% aqueous solution. It is the acid precursor to sodium hypophosphite, the most widely used reducing agent in electroless nickel plating.
Electroless Nickel Plating
The primary industrial application of hypophosphorous acid is as a reducing agent and pH adjusting component in electroless nickel (EN) plating baths. In EN plating, nickel ions are chemically reduced to deposit a uniform nickel-phosphorus alloy on a catalytic substrate without applied current. The phosphorus content — controlled partly by the H₃PO₂ concentration — determines the deposit hardness, corrosion resistance, and magnetic properties.
Antioxidant and Stabilizer Applications
Hypophosphorous acid acts as a process stabilizer and antioxidant in polymer and resin production. It prevents oxidative degradation during high-temperature processing of nylon, PET, and other engineering plastics, extending color stability. It is also used as a reducing agent in pharmaceutical synthesis and in the production of phosphonate compounds.
Pharmaceutical and Specialty Uses
In pharmaceutical manufacturing, hypophosphorous acid is used as a reducing agent in the synthesis of specific active pharmaceutical ingredients. It is also employed in the production of flame retardant phosphorus compounds and in analytical chemistry as a selective reducing reagent.
