What Is Hydrochloric Acid?

Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) is a strong mineral acid produced by dissolving hydrogen chloride gas in water. It is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals globally, serving as a pH adjuster, cleaning agent, and chemical synthesis starting material. At industrial grades of 30–33%, it is a colorless to faintly yellow fuming liquid with a sharp, pungent odor.

Steel Pickling and Metal Treatment

Hydrochloric Acid is the primary acid used in steel pickling — the removal of scale, rust, and oxides from hot-rolled steel prior to galvanizing, drawing, or coating. It reacts rapidly and cleanly with iron oxides, leaving a reactive metal surface. It is also used in aluminum etching and for activation of metal surfaces before electroplating.

pH Adjustment and Water Treatment

HCl is widely used to neutralize alkaline effluent, adjust pH in swimming pools, and treat industrial process water. Its ready availability and cost-effectiveness make it the first-choice acid for large-volume pH correction applications in manufacturing and utilities.
