What Is Isopropylamine?
Isopropylamine (IPA, 2-propylamine) is a low-molecular-weight secondary amine — a colourless, volatile, highly flammable liquid with a strong ammoniacal odour. It is miscible with water in all proportions and has a low boiling point (33°C), making it highly volatile and easily carried over with steam in a boiler-steam system. In boiler and steam system chemistry, isopropylamine is used as a neutralising amine — it is added to the boiler feedwater or steam, volatilises with the steam, condenses in the condensate lines, and neutralises the carbonic acid (H₂CO₃, formed from CO₂ dissolved in the condensate) that causes the low pH (4–5) characteristic of untreated steam condensate and the associated carbon dioxide corrosion of condensate return lines.
Steam Condensate pH Control and Corrosion Prevention
Carbon dioxide corrosion (carbonic acid attack) of copper alloy and mild steel condensate return lines is one of the most common and costly forms of damage in industrial steam systems. CO₂ in steam originates from thermal decomposition of bicarbonate and carbonate alkalinity in the boiler feedwater (2NaHCO₃ → Na₂CO₃ + H₂O + CO₂↑ in the boiler). The generated CO₂ carries over with steam and dissolves in condensate, forming carbonic acid and depressing condensate pH to 4.5–5.5, causing active corrosion. Isopropylamine neutralises this acid in the condensate: (CH₃)₂CHNH₂ + H₂CO₃ → (CH₃)₂CHNH₃⁺ + HCO₃⁻, raising condensate pH to the target 8.0–9.0 and halting corrosion.
Amine Distribution Ratio and Selection
Isopropylamine has a relatively high distribution ratio (steam/condensate partition) — it preferentially stays in the steam phase rather than the condensate phase, making it effective for treating the early condensate (steam lines near the boiler). For long condensate systems or systems with complex distribution, isopropylamine is combined with neutralising amines of lower distribution ratios (cyclohexylamine, morpholine, diethylaminoethanol — DEAE) to achieve treatment across the entire condensate return network. Terracore Chemicals supplies isopropylamine in 25 kg and 200 kg drums with appropriate flammable liquid handling documentation.
