What Is Polyethylene Glycol?
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a condensation polymer of ethylene oxide and water, available across a continuous range of molecular weights — from short-chain liquids (PEG-90, PEG-200, PEG-400) to high-molecular-weight waxy solids (PEG-1500, PEG-4000). The number following PEG indicates average molecular weight in daltons. All grades are non-ionic, water-soluble, and non-volatile, but their physical state, viscosity, and specific application suitability vary with molecular weight.
Formulation Functions by Grade
Low-MW liquid PEGs (PEG-90 to PEG-600) are used as humectants, solubilisers, and coupling agents in liquid detergents, personal care products, and pharmaceutical solutions. Mid-range PEGs (PEG-1000, PEG-1500) function as thickeners and consistency modifiers. High-MW solid PEGs (PEG-3350, PEG-4000) are tablet binders, suppository bases, and lubricants in pharmaceutical manufacturing, and also solid binders in compressed powder cleaning tablets and dishwash detergent blocks.
Supply and Grade Selection
