What Is Sodium Fluorosilicate?

Sodium fluorosilicate (Na₂SiF₆, also sodium silicofluoride) is an inorganic fluoride-silicate salt that is sparingly soluble in water. In aqueous solution it slowly hydrolyses to release fluoride ion (F⁻) and silicic acid. This slow release behaviour makes sodium fluorosilicate useful in flotation as a controlled-release fluoride source, providing sustained fluoride ion activity for silicate gangue mineral depression without the rapid pH shift associated with the hydrolysis of free fluoride. It is particularly useful in phosphate flotation and in iron ore processing.

Flotation Applications

In phosphate flotation, sodium fluorosilicate is used together with fatty acid collectors to selectively float apatite while depressing quartz, feldspar, and other silicate gangue minerals. The fluorosilicate ion and released fluoride adsorb on quartz surfaces, making them hydrophilic and reducing collector response. In iron ore (hematite/magnetite) flotation circuits, sodium fluorosilicate is used as a silica depressant in reverse cationic flotation where quartz is floated away from iron oxide minerals, or as an activator for iron minerals in direct fatty acid flotation. Its low solubility provides buffering of fluoride concentration in the pulp, advantageous in circuits where fluoride dosage control is critical.
