What Is Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol?
Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC, 4-methylpentan-2-ol) is a branched C6 aliphatic alcohol and the dominant commercial flotation frother in global mining operations. It is produced by hydrogenation of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). MIBC functions as a frother by adsorbing at the air-water interface in flotation cells, reducing surface tension and stabilising the air bubbles formed by the impeller. Its limited water solubility (~1.7%) means it partitions strongly to the air-water interface where it is needed, while its relatively short alkyl chain (C6) limits over-froth persistence compared to longer-chain frothers.
Froth Properties and Flotation Performance
MIBC is particularly valued for producing highly selective froths — mineral-rich froths with relatively low gangue entrainment compared to pine oil and some other frothers. This selectivity results from its moderate froth stability: the froth produced is persistent enough to carry mineralised bubbles to the launder overflow but breaks down readily on the froth surface, allowing gangue-bearing water films to drain before overflow. MIBC is effective at very low dosages (typically 20–100 g/t), making it cost-effective and minimising reagent carry-over between circuit stages.
