What Are MCT Oils?

Medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oils are lipid fractions comprising fatty acids with 8 (C8, caprylic) and 10 (C10, capric) carbon chains, derived by fractionation of coconut or palm kernel oil. Unlike long-chain fatty acids, MCTs are absorbed directly into the portal circulation without lymphatic transport, delivering rapid, efficient energy without requiring carnitine for mitochondrial entry.

Nutritional and Performance Benefits

MCT oils are particularly valuable in neonatal and young animal nutrition where long-chain fat digestion is limited by immature pancreatic lipase and bile salt secretion. In piglets, chicks, and fish larvae, MCT supplementation improves energy intake, growth rate, and survival during the critical early-life period.
