Benzoic acid is an aromatic carboxylic acid that is naturally found in many fruits and is an approved feed additive in multiple jurisdictions specifically for swine nutrition. The undissociated form of benzoic acid (active below pH 5) is lipophilic and penetrates bacterial cell membranes, disrupting intracellular pH and inhibiting metabolic enzymes. It is commercially available as white crystalline powder or flakes for dry feed incorporation.

Benzoic acid is one of the best-researched organic acid feed additives, with multiple peer-reviewed studies demonstrating improved growth performance, feed conversion, and reduced diarrhoea incidence in weaner and growing pigs at inclusion rates of 0.5–1%. It is specifically authorised as a feed additive for pigs in the EU (as VevoVitall® brand but also available as generic feed-grade). Its activity against Gram-negative bacteria in the gastric environment supports gut health following the removal of antibiotic growth promoters. In compound feed, it also acts as a mould inhibitor.
