What Is Iron Sulphate?
Iron Sulphate (FeSO₄·7H₂O), also known as ferrous sulphate or copperas, is a green crystalline salt supplying 20% iron. Iron is an essential micronutrient required for chlorophyll synthesis and electron transport in photosynthesis. Iron deficiency (chlorosis) is one of the most common micronutrient disorders in fruit trees, ornamentals, and vegetables grown on alkaline, calcareous, or waterlogged soils where iron is converted to unavailable forms.
Iron Sulphate in Agriculture
Correction of iron chlorosis with iron sulphate can be achieved through soil application, foliar spraying, or fertigation. Soil applications are most effective on acidic soils; on alkaline soils, chelated iron (Fe-EDTA, Fe-EDDHA) is often more efficient. However, iron sulphate is widely used at lower cost for broadcast soil applications where the acidifying effect of the sulphate also helps mobilise soil iron. Foliar applications of 1–2% iron sulphate provide temporary visual correction of chlorosis in trees and shrubs. Turf managers also use iron sulphate to suppress moss and improve grass colour.
