Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) is a powerful inorganic oxidising agent that appears as dark purple to black crystalline granules and forms a characteristic vivid purple solution in water. In water treatment, KMnO₄ is one of the most important pre-oxidants used to remove dissolved iron (Fe²⁺), manganese (Mn²⁺), and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from groundwater sources. These contaminants cause taste, odour, colour, and staining problems in drinking water and must be removed before distribution. KMnO₄ oxidises Fe²⁺ and Mn²⁺ to insoluble Fe³⁺ and MnO₂, which are then removed by filtration or sedimentation.

Iron and Manganese Removal from Groundwater

In municipal and private borehole water treatment, potassium permanganate is added to the raw water ahead of the treatment filter to oxidise soluble iron and manganese. The reaction: 2KMnO₄ + 3Fe²⁺ + 7H₂O → 2MnO₂ + 3Fe(OH)₃ + 2K⁺ + 4H⁺ produces insoluble MnO₂ and iron(III) hydroxide that are captured in the filter bed. The MnO₂ generated also catalyses further Mn²⁺ oxidation and acts as an oxidising filter media (greensand filter systems). H₂S, which causes odour problems in groundwater, is oxidised to odourless elemental sulfur or sulfate by KMnO₄, eliminating the “rotten egg” smell from affected bore water.

Other Water Treatment and Industrial Applications

KMnO₄ is used in potable water systems to control taste- and odour-causing algae-derived compounds (geosmin, MIB) through oxidative degradation. It is used in wastewater treatment to oxidise phenols, cyanides, and organic contaminants. In the mining industry, it treats acid mine drainage by oxidising ferrous iron, and is used in the detoxification of cyanide in gold mining wastewater.
