What Is Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate?

Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS), also known as docusate sodium, sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate, or Aerosol OT, is a diester sulfosuccinate anionic surfactant with exceptional wetting efficiency. At very low concentrations (as little as 0.01–0.1%), DOSS dramatically reduces the surface tension of water, enabling instantaneous wetting of highly hydrophobic or poorly wettable surfaces and substrates that other surfactants cannot penetrate effectively.

Industrial Wetting and Formulation Uses

In industrial cleaning, DOSS is used as a wetting agent in degreasers, penetrant cleaners for soil-packed porous substrates, and fire suppression foam concentrates. In pharmaceuticals it is a stool softener (docusate sodium, USP) and also an excipient in tablet and capsule formulation to improve wetting of hydrophobic API particles. In agricultural chemistry DOSS is a standard adjuvant in pesticide and herbicide formulations to improve leaf surface coverage and penetration into the cuticle.
