What Is Copper Sulphate?

Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O), commonly known as blue vitriol, is a bright blue crystalline salt containing 25% copper. It is the most widely used copper source in agriculture for both nutritional and fungicidal applications. Copper is an essential micronutrient for enzyme activity, nitrogen metabolism, and seed production in plants. Deficiency is most common on sandy, acidic, or high organic matter soils.

Copper Sulphate in Fertilizer and Crop Protection

As a micronutrient fertilizer, copper sulphate is applied to soil or as a foliar spray to correct copper deficiency, which can limit yield in cereals, grains, and citrus. It is also the active ingredient in Bordeaux mixture (combined with lime), one of the oldest and most widely used fungicidal sprays for control of downy mildew, late blight, and other oomycete diseases. In the Western Cape, Bordeaux mixture is still widely used in wine grape vineyards as part of integrated disease management.
