What Is Dicyandiamide (DCD)?

Dicyandiamide (DCD, C₂H₄N₄) is a white crystalline organic compound with 66.6% nitrogen content. It is used as a nitrification inhibitor — a compound that slows the conversion of ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺) to nitrate (NO₃⁻) in the soil by inhibiting the activity of Nitrosomonas bacteria. This reduces the risk of nitrate leaching into groundwater, denitrification losses as nitrous oxide (N₂O), and improves the efficiency of applied nitrogen fertilizer in high-rainfall environments.

DCD is used in precision nitrogen management programs, particularly in pastoral farming systems where urine nitrogen from grazing livestock poses a significant leaching risk.
