What Is Potassium Hydroxide (Caustic Potash)?

Potassium hydroxide (KOH), commonly called caustic potash, is a white deliquescent solid that functions as a strong base with properties closely analogous to but distinct from sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The key difference is that potassium soaps and potassium salts are generally more soluble in water and produce softer, more pliable materials than their sodium counterparts. This makes KOH the alkali of choice wherever liquid or soft products are required — liquid soap, soft potassium silicate, electrolyte solutions, and specialty potassium chemicals.

Liquid Soap & Soft Soap Manufacturing

The defining use of potassium hydroxide in consumer chemistry is the manufacture of liquid soap and soft soap. When KOH reacts with vegetable oils or fatty acids, it produces potassium soaps (soft soap) rather than the hard sodium soaps produced by NaOH saponification. Liquid hand soaps, body washes, shaving creams, and industrial liquid cleaners are all based on potassium fatty acid salts. The higher water solubility of potassium soaps allows formulation at higher active concentrations without the product solidifying.

Alkaline Battery Electrolyte & Electrochemistry

Concentrated potassium hydroxide solution (30–40%) is the electrolyte of choice in alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D and button cells), nickel–cadmium (NiCd), nickel–metal hydride (NiMH), and certain zinc-air batteries. KOH outperforms NaOH in electrochemical cells because of its higher ionic conductivity at equivalent concentrations. In industrial electrolysis, concentrated KOH is used in water electrolysers for hydrogen production and in the chlor-potash process for the production of chlorine and potassium hydroxide itself from potassium chloride brine.

Specialty Chemicals & Agricultural Uses

Potassium hydroxide is used in the synthesis of specialty potassium chemicals including potassium carbonate, potassium silicate, potassium phosphates, and potassium soaps of resin acids (potassium resinate). In agrochemical manufacturing, KOH is used to neutralise and formulate herbicides, fungicides, and micronutrient fertilisers where potassium is a nutritional component. In analytical chemistry it is used as a primary standard for acid standardisation, and in food processing as a pH regulator (E525) approved for certain food applications.
