What Is ATMP?

ATMP (amino trimethylene phosphonic acid, also NTMP — nitrilotrimethylene phosphonic acid) is an organophosphonate compound with three phosphonic acid groups attached through methylene bridges to a central nitrogen. ATMP is among the most established and widely used scale inhibitors in water treatment chemistry — it is cost-effective, broadly available, and provides reliable threshold scale inhibition for the most common scale types (calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate) encountered in industrial cooling water and boiler water systems. Like other organophosphonates, ATMP works through the threshold inhibition mechanism, adsorbing onto active crystal growth sites of incipient scale and preventing further scale crystal development at dosages far below the stoichiometric equivalent.

Cooling Water and Boiler Water Applications

In cooling water treatment, ATMP is used at 2–5 mg/L as a scale inhibitor, often in combination with polymeric dispersants (polyacrylic acid, HPMA) and corrosion inhibitors (zinc sulfate, benzotriazole, molybdate) in blended treatment programmes. It provides control of calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate scale in heat exchangers and cooling tower fill. ATMP is also effective as an iron sequestrant — it coordinates dissolved iron and prevents iron oxide (rust) deposition. In low-pressure boiler systems, ATMP is used to sequester hardness ions (calcium, magnesium) and prevent scale on heat transfer surfaces. It is more hydrolytically stable than polyphosphate inhibitors in hot water environments.

In oilfield injection water systems and surface pipeline scale control, ATMP is applied to prevent carbonate scale formation. It is also used in formulating blended antiscalant products for reverse osmosis (RO) membrane pre-treatment to prevent carbonate and sulfate scale on membrane surfaces.
