What Is Sodium Diisoamyl Dithiophosphate?

Sodium diisoamyl dithiophosphate (Na-DIAMP-DTP) is a long-chain dialkyl dithiophosphate carrying two C5 (isoamyl) groups on the phosphorus centre. Longer alkyl chains on the DTP group increase hydrophobicity of the adsorbed collector layer on mineral surfaces, producing stronger collecting power — analogous to the collector strength relationship in the xanthate series where amyl xanthates are stronger than ethyl or butyl xanthates. As a result, sodium diisoamyl DTP is among the more powerful dithiophosphate collectors, combining DTP selectivity advantages with the high collecting strength usually associated with long-chain xanthates.

High-Strength DTP Performance

Sodium diisoamyl dithiophosphate is used where DTP chemistry is preferred over xanthates (often due to better selectivity or stability at specific pH ranges) but where the collecting strength of short-chain DTPs (ethyl or butyl) is insufficient for adequate mineral recovery. It is particularly effective for recovering native gold, gold-bearing sulphides, and copper minerals in circuits where xanthate-based collectors perform poorly due to ore-specific surface chemistry conditions. It can also be used as a high-strength co-collector in blends with shorter-chain DTPs or xanthates.
