Castor oil is a vegetable triglyceride oil extracted from the seeds of Ricinus communis. It is distinctive among natural oils for its exceptionally high ricinoleic acid content (85–90%), a C18 monounsaturated hydroxyl fatty acid (12-hydroxy-octadecanoic acid) that gives castor oil its unusual properties: high viscosity, film-forming ability, hygroscopicity (ability to attract and retain moisture), excellent miscibility with alcohols, and superior solubilising power for certain waxes and resins.
