Iyini iNicotinamide?
Nicotinamide (niacinamide) is the amide form of niacin (Vitamin B3) and one of two commonly used feed-grade forms alongside nicotinic acid. It functions as a precursor to NAD⁺ and NADP⁺, coenzymes essential for hundreds of oxidation-reduction reactions in energy metabolism. Nicotinamide is well tolerated in ruminants and does not cause the flushing reaction associated with nicotinic acid at high doses.
Indima Ekudleni Kwezilwane
Niacin is particularly important in high-producing dairy cows during the transition period where negative energy balance increases the risk of subclinical ketosis. Supplemental niacin modifies lipid metabolism, reduces non-esterified fatty acids and ketone body accumulation, and supports glucose production. In poultry, niacin prevents pellagra-like dermatitis and supports normal energy metabolism. In growing pigs, niacin sufficiency supports lean tissue deposition and skin health.
