Potassium Iodide (KI) is a white crystalline salt providing 76.5% iodine by weight and high water solubility, making it suitable for applications where rapid iodine dissolution is required. While less stable than potassium iodate in premix environments due to susceptibility to iodide oxidation, KI is preferred for liquid supplement formulations, water-soluble iodine applications in aquaculture, and direct drinking water supplementation programs where the iodine will be consumed shortly after preparation.

Potassium iodide is widely used in aquaculture where it can be dissolved in water for direct water treatment or incorporated into water-soluble feed supplements. In drinking water iodine supplementation programs for poultry and cattle on iodine-deficient pastures, KI is easily dissolved and administered through water medicating systems. Its high iodine content (76.5%) means less product is required to deliver a given iodine dose compared to potassium iodate. For premix applications, potassium iodate is recommended, but KI remains the standard for liquid applications.
