What Is Fluorozirconic Acid?

Fluorozirconic Acid (hexafluorozirconic acid, H₂ZrF₆) is an inorganic fluoride compound supplied as a 40–45% aqueous solution. It is a key reagent in chromate-free metal pre-treatment chemistry, where it replaces hexavalent chromium-based conversion coatings on aluminum, zinc, and galvanized steel. It reacts with the metal surface to form a thin, adherent zirconium oxide/fluoride conversion layer that promotes paint adhesion and provides a degree of corrosion protection.

Chromate-Free Conversion Coatings

The primary application of fluorozirconic acid is in thin-film zirconium-based conversion coating systems — known as “zirconia coatings” or “Zr-based pre-treatments” — that serve as a chromate-free alternative to chromate and phosphate conversion coatings on aluminum, zinc, and cold-rolled steel ahead of organic coating application. These systems are used extensively in the automotive, appliance, and general industrial painting lines, driven by regulatory pressure on hexavalent chromium (REACH) and phosphate effluent.

Aluminum Surface Pre-treatment

On aluminum substrates, fluorozirconic acid etches the native oxide layer and deposits a thin, amorphous ZrO₂/ZrFₖ film. This film improves the adhesion of powder coatings, liquid paints, and adhesives, and provides a degree of corrosion protection. Zr-based coatings on aluminum are used in automotive body panels, architectural extrusions, and consumer goods. The process is typically applied in a no-rinse or spray-rinse coil coating line configuration.

Use in Rinse-Dry and Coil Coating Lines

Fluorozirconic acid-based pre-treatments operate at low concentrations (typically 50–200 ppm Zr), low temperature, and produce minimal sludge, making them suitable for modern high-speed coil coating and automotive painting lines. They are compatible with both powder and liquid coating systems and produce no phosphate effluent, reducing wastewater treatment costs. Terracore supplies fluorozirconic acid for dilution and formulation into pre-treatment bath solutions.
