What is Calcium Propionate?

Calcium propionate is the calcium salt of propionic acid and a widely approved feed and food preservative used specifically for its antifungal activity. In aqueous environments and within the gastrointestinal tract, calcium propionate releases biologically active propionic acid, which penetrates fungal cells and inhibits enzyme systems essential for sporulation and hyphal growth. As the calcium salt, it offers the additional advantage of contributing calcium to the diet alongside its preservative function.

In compound feed, it is included at 1,000–3,000 ppm to prevent mould growth during storage, particularly in humid climates like South Africa where aflatoxin risk is high.
