Hydroxyethylene diphosphonic acid is an organophosphonate compound used as a scale inhibitor and metal ion chelating agent in industrial water treatment programmes. It is structurally related to HEDP and shares similar water treatment mechanisms — threshold scale inhibition through adsorption onto incipient crystal nuclei, and chelation of calcium, iron, and other divalent metal ions that contribute to scale-forming and fouling conditions in heat exchange equipment, piping, and process vessels.

Applications in Cooling and Process Water
