What Is Antimony Sulfide?
Antimony trisulfide (Sb₂S₃), also known as antimony sulfide or stibnite in its mineral form, is an orange-red to black powder depending on particle size and crystal form. The amorphous orange form (precipitated) and the crystalline black form (stibnite) have different properties and applications. It combines the reactivity of sulfide with the unique properties of antimony, making it valuable in pyrotechnics, friction materials, and semiconductor research.
Friction Materials & Brake Pads
Antimony sulfide is an important component in automotive friction materials, including brake pads, brake linings, and clutch facings. It functions as a lubricant and anti-squeal agent that stabilises friction behaviour across a wide temperature range. Combined with other friction modifiers and binders in asbestos-free formulations, it helps achieve consistent, controlled braking performance in heavy-duty and passenger vehicle applications.
Pyrotechnics & Safety Matches
In pyrotechnics, antimony sulfide is used as a fuel component in flash compositions, producing bright white flashes when combined with oxidisers such as potassium perchlorate or potassium chlorate. Safety matches use antimony sulfide in the head composition, where it ignites reliably when struck against the red phosphorus-containing striker strip. Military and commercial pyrotechnic products also use antimony sulfide in delay compositions and primers.
Semiconductors & Specialty Coatings
Antimony sulfide is a semiconductor material (bandgap ~1.7 eV) that has attracted attention as a photovoltaic absorber in thin-film solar cells. Research groups have explored Sb₂S₃ as a non-toxic, earth-abundant alternative absorber material. It is also used as a pigment in certain glass formulations to produce orange-yellow colours, and in specialty coatings requiring sulfide-based corrosion protection or infrared-absorbing properties.
