What Is Sodium Chlorate?

Sodium chlorate (NaClO₃) is a white crystalline, strongly oxidising salt produced by electrolysis of sodium chloride solution. Its powerful oxidising capacity is exploited in two major applications: chlorine dioxide generation for pulp bleaching and water disinfection, and as a herbicide active ingredient. Sodium chlorate is regulated in many jurisdictions due to its oxidising hazard and herbicidal properties, and Terracore Chemicals supplies it exclusively to verified industrial end-users with appropriate documentation.

Pulp & Paper Bleaching (ClO₂ Generation)

The primary global use of sodium chlorate is in the manufacture of chlorine dioxide (ClO₂), which is the dominant bleaching chemical in modern Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) pulp bleaching. ClO₂ is generated on-site at paper mills by reducing sodium chlorate with sulfuric acid and methanol. ECF bleaching achieves high brightness, fibre strength retention, and environmental performance compared to elemental chlorine bleaching, making sodium chlorate an indirect but essential input for paper production.

Herbicide Production & Agricultural Use

Sodium chlorate is a non-selective herbicide that controls broad-leaved weeds, grasses, and brush when applied to soil or foliage. It is used as a harvest desiccant for cotton and other crops, allowing uniform ripening and mechanical harvesting. In formulation, it is blended with sodium metaborate to extend residual activity. Herbicide-grade sodium chlorate is registered for use under national agricultural registration schemes and must be handled in accordance with label instructions and safety data sheets.

Chemical Synthesis & Industrial Oxidation

Sodium chlorate is used in the synthesis of perchlorates, chlorites, and other chlorine oxyanions. It functions as an oxidising agent in the manufacture of certain dyes, pigments, and specialty chemicals. In match manufacture, sodium chlorate was historically the principal oxidiser in match heads; regulatory restrictions have led to its replacement by potassium chlorate or safer alternatives in many markets. Supply is subject to end-user verification and regulatory compliance requirements.
