What Is Calcium Bromide?

Calcium bromide (CaBr₂) is a water-white to pale yellow crystalline solid or concentrated aqueous solution with exceptional water solubility — solution densities of up to 1.82 g/cm³ are achievable at saturation. This high density in solution is the key property exploited in oil and gas well completion and workover fluids, where dense clear brines are required to control wellbore pressure without damaging the reservoir formation.

Oil & Gas Well Completion Fluids

The primary application of calcium bromide is as a weighting agent in clear brine completion and workover fluids in oil and gas operations. CaBr₂ brines can be blended with calcium chloride and zinc bromide to achieve densities from 11.0 to 21.0 lb/gal without solids. These clear brines allow unobstructed well logging and perforating operations while providing hydrostatic pressure control needed to safely complete high-pressure hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Photography & Chemical Synthesis

In traditional photography, calcium bromide provides bromide ions used in photographic emulsions and developers. In organic chemistry it is used as a reagent for the synthesis of alkyl bromides by halide exchange reactions. It also serves as a source of calcium ions in certain electroplating baths and as a flame retardant synergist in combination with antimony trioxide in polymer formulations.

Food-grade calcium bromide has been used as a dough conditioner in bread baking, though potassium bromate has largely replaced this use.
