What is Vitamin K3 (Menadione)?

Vitamin K3 (menadione) is a synthetic provitamin K that is converted in animal tissues to the biologically active Menaquinone-4 (MK-4). The most common feed-grade form is Menadione Sodium Bisulphite (MSB), a water-soluble, relatively stable white crystalline powder with a menadione content of approximately 50%. It is the most widely used form of Vitamin K in livestock and poultry feed.

Vitamin K is essential for the post-translational carboxylation of glutamic acid residues in clotting factors (II, VII, IX, X) and bone proteins (osteocalcin, matrix Gla-protein). Deficiency causes haemorrhagic disease, impaired clotting, and skeletal problems. In poultry, vitamin K deficiency leads to haemorrhagic syndrome with blood spots in meat, reproductive failure, and embryonic mortality. Feed-grade vitamin K3 supplementation ensures adequate K activity across all species when natural dietary sources (green forages, K1) are limiting.
