Wat is Taurine?

Taurine is a sulphonic amino acid found in high concentrations in the heart, retina, and skeletal muscle of animals. Unlike most amino acids, it is not incorporated into proteins but plays critical roles in osmoregulation, membrane stabilisation, antioxidant defence, and bile acid conjugation. Cats cannot synthesise sufficient taurine endogenously and require dietary supplementation to prevent dilated cardiomyopathy and retinal degeneration.

Rol in diervoeding

In pet food manufacturing, taurine is an essential ingredient for all cat foods and increasingly recognised in dog foods following links between grain-free diets and canine dilated cardiomyopathy. In aquaculture, taurine supplementation in fishmeal-free diets supports normal vision, heart function, and osmoregulation in marine and freshwater fish species. In poultry, taurine supports bile acid conjugation, improving fat digestion and fat-soluble vitamin absorption.
