What are Feed Phosphates?

Monocalcium Phosphate (MCP) and Dicalcium Phosphate (DCP) are the most widely used inorganic phosphorus and calcium sources in compound animal feed. MCP (Ca(H₂PO₄)₂) has higher phosphorus bioavailability (80–90%) but lower calcium content and is slightly acidic, making it preferred for broiler and aquaculture diets. DCP (CaHPO₄) provides balanced calcium and phosphorus but slightly lower P bioavailability (68–72%), and is widely used across all livestock species.

Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the animal body and is essential for skeletal development, energy metabolism (ATP), cell signalling, and milk production. Plant phosphorus is largely bound as phytate and has limited bioavailability in monogastric animals. Inorganic feed phosphates provide readily bioavailable phosphorus to meet requirements that cannot be satisfied by phytate-bound sources. Inadequate phosphorus causes poor bone mineralisation, lameness, rickets, and reduced milk yield. Precise phosphorus supplementation with MCP or DCP, adjusted for phytase use, is fundamental to modern poultry, swine, and ruminant nutrition.
