What Is Polyacrylic Acid?

Polyacrylic acid (PAA) is a synthetic anionic polyelectrolyte polymer of acrylic acid, available as the acid form or as the sodium salt (sodium polyacrylate). In water treatment, PAA is used as a dispersant and threshold scale inhibitor — the two key functions that improve water circuit performance and reduce fouling and scaling. The molecular weight of PAA determines its functional emphasis: lower MW grades (1,000–10,000 Da) are more effective as threshold scale inhibitors (adsorbing on incipient scale crystals), while higher MW grades (10,000–100,000 Da) are more effective as dispersants (adsorbing on suspended particles to prevent aggregation).

Scale Inhibition and Dispersancy

As a threshold scale inhibitor, PAA prevents growth of calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, calcium phosphate, and zinc hydroxide crystals by adsorbing on active crystal growth faces. As a dispersant, PAA adsorbs on iron oxide (rust), clay, silt, and corrosion product particles in suspension, providing steric and electrostatic stabilisation that keeps particles dispersed and prevents them from agglomerating into deposits on heat exchanger surfaces or in dead-leg pipe sections. PAA dispersancy is important in systems that pick up suspended solids from make-up water or internal corrosion — particularly in older pipework that adds iron oxide to the system water continuously.

PAA is a component of most commercial blended cooling water treatment products, where it works alongside phosphonates and corrosion inhibitors to deliver comprehensive scale, dispersion, and corrosion control.
