Glutaraldehyde as a Biocide and Crosslinker

Glutaraldehyde is a dialdehyde with potent biocidal activity against bacteria, fungi, spores, and viruses, acting by crosslinking amine groups in proteins. In the oilfield it is injected into production water to control sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that cause hydrogen sulfide souring and biocorrosion. In medicine it sterilises heat-sensitive endoscopes and instruments. As a crosslinker in leather tanning and gelatin/protein films, it forms stable amide-type bonds, improving wet-strength and thermal stability.

Supply Concentrations and Packaging

Terracore supplies glutaraldehyde at 25% active (general biocide, lower handling hazard) and 50% active (industrial bulk, higher potency). Available in 200 L HDPE drums and 1,000 L IBC. Oilfield grade includes surfactant and corrosion-inhibitor formulation options. COA (active assay by HPLC or titration) and SDS are provided. Personnel handling concentrations above 25% should use supplied-air or full-face respirator.
