Xanthan gum is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide produced by fermentation of glucose or sucrose with the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. It is the most widely used rheology modifier in food, personal care, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications, prized for its exceptional pseudoplastic character, very wide pH stability (2–12), temperature stability, and compatibility with salts, acids, alkalis, and most functional ingredients.

Suspension and Rheology Performance

Xanthan gum produces a very high yield stress at low concentration, effectively preventing settling of suspended particles (abrasive granules, pigments, insoluble actives) even in low-viscosity continuous-phase formulations. This makes it the first-choice suspending agent for creamy abrasive cleaners, gel toilet bowl cleaners, and drain treatment gels that must retain particles in suspension over a shelf life of 12–18 months without refrigeration.
