What Is Barium Sulfate?

Barium sulfate (BaSO₄, naturally occurring as the mineral barite) is an inorganic barium salt that is essentially insoluble in water, acids, and most solvents. Its high density (~4.5 g/cm³), chemical inertness, whiteness, and opacity make it valuable across a wide range of industrial applications. In the oil and gas industry, finely ground barium sulfate (barite) is the primary weighting agent used to control the density of drilling fluids (mud) and prevent well blowouts during oil and gas drilling. In chemical processing, barium sulfate is a precursor for the manufacture of other barium compounds and is used in wastewater treatment to precipitate and remove sulfate ions from process water.

Mining and Process Industry Applications

In mining, barium sulfate is used in borehole drilling fluids for mineral exploration and in oil and gas drilling operations. In hydrometallurgy and acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment, adding barium compounds (barium chloride or barium carbonate) to sulfate-rich mine water precipitates barium sulfate, removing excess sulfate from AMD effluent before discharge — important where sulfate limits apply under environmental licences. Barium sulfate is also used in lead-acid battery pastes, as a filler in rubber and plastics, and as the white pigment extender in paints and coatings.
