What Is Guar Gum?

Guar gum is a natural polysaccharide derived from the endosperm of the guar bean, consisting of a mannose backbone with galactose side chains (galactomannan). It is one of the most efficient natural hydrocolloids, producing very high viscosity at low concentration (1–3%) due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding of its extended polymer chains. It is approved as a food additive (E412) and is widely used in cleaning products, cosmetics, hydraulic fracturing, and paper manufacturing.

Thickening and Suspension Performance

Guar gum is an effective thickener in neutral to mildly alkaline aqueous systems, producing pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) viscosity that flows under application force and recovers on resting. This rheology is ideal for gel hand soaps, cleaning gel concentrates, and thick liquid cleaners that must pour or pump easily but cling to vertical surfaces after application. It also suspends insoluble particles (abrasives, pigments) and prevents phase separation in opaque formulations.
