What Is Alkyl Hydroximic Acid?

Alkyl hydroximic acids (also written as hydroxamic acids) are a class of chelating collectors characterised by the functional group –C(=O)NHOH, where the carbon is bonded to an alkyl chain. Unlike xanthates and dithiophosphates which collect through sulfur-based ligands, hydroximic acid collectors chelate metal ions at mineral surfaces through their hydroxamate nitrogen and oxygen atoms, forming stable five-membered ring chelate complexes. This mechanism is highly effective for oxide and non-sulphide minerals (cassiterite, wolframite, hematite, ilmenite, REE carbonates) that show poor or no response to sulfur-based collectors.

Non-Sulphide Mineral Flotation

Alkyl hydroximic acid is the generic term for a range of hydroxamate collectors produced with different alkyl chain lengths (C7–C9 are common) to tune collecting strength and selectivity. These collectors are especially important in the flotation of tin (cassiterite, SnO₂), tungsten (wolframite, scheelite), niobium, tantalum oxides, and rare earth element (REE) minerals, where sulphide flotation chemistry is entirely inapplicable. Hydroximic acid collectors are also increasingly investigated for iron ore reverse flotation and phosphate mineral flotation.

Supply and Application Conditions

Terracore Chemicals supplies alkyl hydroximic acid in solid (bag) and liquid (drum) forms. Effective use typically requires conditioning at slightly elevated temperatures or moderately alkaline pH to improve solubility and surface adsorption. Technical data sheets and guidance on conditioning protocols for specific ore types are available on request.

Sovellukset

  • Cassiterite (tin oxide) flotation — primary collector
  • Wolframite and scheelite (tungsten) flotation
  • Hematite and iron oxide direct flotation
  • Rare earth mineral (REE oxide/carbonate) flotation
  • Ilmenite and rutile titanium mineral flotation
  • Niobium and tantalum oxide mineral recovery
