What Is Salicylic Acid?

Salicylic acid (2-hydroxybenzoic acid) is a naturally occurring beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) found in willow bark and other plants, and widely produced synthetically for pharmaceutical and cosmetic use. Unlike alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs, which are water-soluble), salicylic acid is lipophilic — it dissolves in oils, allowing it to penetrate into the sebaceous follicle (pore), where it exerts its exfoliating and anti-comedogenic actions. This oil-solubility makes salicylic acid uniquely effective for oily and acne-prone skin where sebum-filled follicles are the site of comedone (blackhead and whitehead) formation and acne lesion development.

Mechanism and Skin Benefits

Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent — it loosens and dissolves the intercellular cement holding corneocyte clusters together within the follicle, unclogging pores and allowing sebum and keratinised debris to be expelled. At 0.5–2% in leave-on products, it progressively clears comedones, reduces acne lesion counts, and refines pore appearance. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties. In leave-on formulations, salicylic acid is effective in toners, serums, spot treatments, and pore-refining moisturisers. In rinse-off products, it is the active ingredient in acne cleansers, dandruff shampoos (where it reduces scalp flaking and seborrhoeic dermatitis), and exfoliating body washes for keratosis pilaris (KP).
