Sodium Hydrosulfite — Grades Explained

Sodium hydrosulfite (sodium dithionite) is offered in multiple grades that differ primarily in active Na₂S₂O₄ content and stabiliser additions. The 74% grade contains significant amounts of sodium sulphite and sodium carbonate as stabilisers, making it more stable during storage and transport at some sacrifice of reductive capacity per kilogram. The 88% and 90% grades contain a higher active fraction and are preferred where maximum reducing power per unit cost is the priority — typical of high-throughput textile dyehouses and paper mills.

Formulation and Process Selection

Grade selection depends on the application: 74% stabilised product is suitable for intermittent-use operations and remote-location storage where the additional stability offsets the slightly higher cost per active gram. The 88–90% grades are used in continuous textile operations with high annual consumption, where storage turnover is rapid and the cost savings per active kilogram are significant. All grades produce identical chemistry in solution — the difference is only in concentration and stability of the dry powder.
