What Is Lithium Chloride?

Lithium chloride (LiCl) is a white, highly hygroscopic crystalline solid with an ionic lattice structure. Among alkali metal chlorides, lithium chloride has an unusually high solubility in organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, and THF, which is exploited in chemical synthesis and polymer dissolution. Its extreme hygroscopicity — it can absorb up to 39% of its own weight in water — makes it one of the most effective desiccant materials available for industrial and laboratory applications.

Industrial Desiccant & Air Dehumidification

Lithium chloride is used in industrial air conditioning and dehumidification systems as a liquid desiccant, particularly in installations where deep drying or very low dew points are required. LiCl solution absorbs moisture from process air streams and is regenerated by heating. It is used in dry rooms for battery cell manufacturing, pharmaceutical clean rooms, and industrial drying applications where silica gel or molecular sieves cannot achieve the required humidity levels.

Welding, Brazing & Aluminium Flux

Lithium chloride is an important component of flux mixtures used for aluminium and magnesium welding, brazing, and soldering. LiCl-KCl eutectic mixtures and other lithium chloride-based fluxes dissolve aluminium oxide films, enabling effective metallic bonding. These fluxes improve weld quality, reduce porosity, and allow brazing of aluminium alloy heat exchangers, automotive components, and aerospace structures at lower temperatures.

Chemical Synthesis & Electrolytes

LiCl is used in Meerwein’s reagent and as a halide source in Finkelstein reactions for converting alkyl bromides and iodides to alkyl chlorides. It dissolves polyamides (nylon) and certain cellulose derivatives for analytical characterisation and processing. In electrochemical applications, lithium chloride is used in non-aqueous electrolytes for lithium-thionyl chloride primary batteries and in molten salt electrolytes for high-temperature batteries and electrolysis.
