Soluble Dietary Fibre Supplier South Africa

What is Soluble Fibre?

Soluble dietary fibres are carbohydrate polymers that dissolve in water to form viscous gels and are fermented by colonic microbiota to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), primarily acetate, propionate, and butyrate. Common sources include inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), beta-glucan, and pectin. These fibres are classified as prebiotics because they selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the gut.

The fermentation of soluble fibres in the large intestine generates SCFAs that serve as energy substrates for colonocytes, modulate intestinal pH, and competitively inhibit pathogen attachment. In swine and poultry, dietary soluble fibre supplementation has demonstrated benefits for intestinal microbiome diversity, mucosal integrity, and overall gut health, particularly in post-weaning and post-antibiotic periods. In companion animals, soluble fibre supports stool consistency, intestinal motility, and weight management through satiety effects.
