What Is Bromine for Water Treatment?
Bromine is a halogen element (Group 17) used as an oxidising biocide in water treatment, particularly for industrial cooling water systems and warm-water recreational applications (spas, hot tubs, heated pools). In water treatment, bromine is generally not applied as elemental liquid bromine (Br₂, a corrosive, fuming brown liquid) but as bromine-generating compounds or activated sodium bromide systems. BCDMH (1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin) tablets slowly release bromine in water. Alternatively, sodium bromide (NaBr) is combined with an oxidant (chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, or ozone) to generate hypobromous acid (HOBr) in situ — the active biocidal species.
Advantages Over Chlorine at High pH
The key advantage of bromine-based biocides over chlorine is their maintenance of biocidal efficacy across a wider pH range. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl, the active disinfecting species from chlorine) at pH 8.0 comprises only ~21% of total chlorine, with the rest as the much less active hypochlorite (OCl⁻). In contrast, hypobromous acid (HOBr, active bromide species) remains predominant up to pH ~8.5, making bromine 3–5× more effective than chlorine on a weight basis at typical cooling tower and spa pH (7.5–8.5). This makes bromine the preferred biocide for cooling towers and spas where pH is intentionally maintained at 7.5–9.0 for scale and corrosion control.
Spa, Hot Tub, and Warm Water Applications
Bromine is the standard sanitiser for spa pools and hot tubs because it remains effective at high water temperatures (50–40°C), does not produce the eye and skin irritation associated with chloramines at elevated temperatures, and works effectively at the higher pH typical of carbonate-buffered spa water. Terracore Chemicals supplies bromine as BCDMH tablets, sodium bromide (for activated bromide systems), and advises on bromine-based water treatment programmes for cooling water and recreational water applications.
