What Is Sodium Diisobutyl Dithiophosphate?

Sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphate (Na-DIBDTP) is a C4 dialkyl dithiophosphate carrying two isobutyl groups on the phosphorus centre, supplied as an alkaline sodium salt solution. It occupies the mid-range position in the DTP series — more powerful than diethyl DTP but more selective than diisoamyl DTP — and offers a practical balance of collecting strength and selectivity that suits a wide range of sulphide ore types. The isobutyl geometry provides somewhat better selectivity against iron sulphides compared to the n-butyl form.

Collector Performance

Na-DIBDTP collects copper sulphides (chalcopyrite, chalcocite), gold, and lead sulphides (galena) effectively and can recover activated sphalerite (zinc). Its selectivity against pyrite is better than amyl xanthates but weaker than short-chain ethyl DTPs, placing it in a useful middle ground for circuits that need both recovery breadth and iron sulphide control. It is widely used as a co-collector with PIBX or SIBX in PGM circuits, where the combined DTP/xanthate blend provides both high PGM mineral collection and control of pyrrhotite flotation.
