What Is Copper Oxychloride?

Copper Oxychloride (Cu₂(OH)₃Cl), also called copper chloride hydroxide, is a green copper compound used both as a fungicidal active ingredient and as a high-analysis copper source in micronutrient products. With 57–58% copper content, it provides significantly more copper per kilogram than copper sulphate pentahydrate. It is effective against a range of fungal and oomycete pathogens including downy mildew, early and late blight, bacterial canker, and anthracnose.

Copper Oxychloride in Crop Protection

Copper oxychloride is one of the most widely used copper fungicides in South African agriculture, especially in stone fruit, citrus, grapes, and vegetables. It is a contact fungicide that works by releasing Cu²⁺ ions in the presence of moisture, which disrupts pathogen cell membranes and enzyme systems. It is commonly formulated as a wettable powder (WP) or suspension concentrate (SC) and is registered for use in many crops. It can also be used in combination with mancozeb and other protective fungicides.
