What Is Oxalic Acid?

Oxalic acid is the simplest dicarboxylic acid, occurring naturally in many plants and foods. Its technical importance lies in its ability to form insoluble calcium oxalate precipitates (removing calcium scale) and to act as a mild reducing agent that bleaches rust stains by reducing Fe³⁺ iron to the soluble Fe²⁺ form, which can then be rinsed away.
