What Is Caustic Soda Liquid?

Caustic soda liquid is an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), typically supplied at concentrations of 32% (membrane grade, used in water treatment) or 46–50% (standard industrial grade). It eliminates the dissolution step required with solid forms and integrates directly into continuous dosing systems via pumps and flow meters. As one of the highest-volume liquid chemicals shipped, it is supplied by Terracore Chemicals in IBC containers, bulk tank trucks, or isotainers depending on customer location and volume.

Continuous Process Dosing

Liquid caustic soda is the preferred form wherever large, continuous volumes of NaOH are consumed and solid dissolution would create a process bottleneck. Paper mills dosing white liquor make-up, chlor-alkali plants, water treatment facilities, textile mercerising ranges, and large-scale chemical reactors all operate with liquid caustic supplied from bulk storage tanks fed directly by pump. The avoidance of dissolution heat management and the ability to meter accurately with chemical dosing pumps makes liquid caustic the most operationally efficient form for high-throughput applications.

Pulp & Paper and Textile Industries

In the kraft pulp process, liquid caustic soda is a primary component of white liquor alongside sodium sulfide, used to cook wood chips and dissolve lignin in the digester. Make-up caustic is continuously added to compensate for chemical losses in the pulping cycle. In textile mercerisation, NaOH solution at 18–25% concentration (mercerising lye) is applied to cotton yarn or fabric under tension to swell fibres, improving dye affinity, tensile strength, and lustre — a continuous process in woven and knitted fabric finishing.

Water Treatment & Environmental Applications

Municipal water authorities use 32% liquid caustic soda (membrane-grade) to adjust the pH of treated drinking water for corrosion control in distribution networks. Industrial effluent treatment plants dose liquid NaOH to neutralise acids and precipitate heavy metals before discharge. In flue gas scrubbing systems, liquid caustic is used to absorb SO₂ and HCl from combustion gases in chemical plants, incinerators, and power stations. Terracore supplies liquid caustic with delivery documentation, MSDS, and Certificate of Analysis for every consignment.
