What Is a High-Precision Delay Element?

A high-precision delay element (surface connector, delay connector) is a pyrotechnic component used in non-electric blast initiation systems to provide the inter-hole or inter-row delay timing on the surface of the blast. In a standard non-electric blast circuit, the downline detonator in each blast hole provides an in-hole delay, and the surface connector provides an additional delay between the trunkline signal arriving and the downline being fired. By selecting different delay numbers for the surface connectors at each hole or row, the blasting engineer creates the exact timing sequence of the blast — which holes fire first, which next, and with what timing interval between them. The high-precision grade achieves ±2–3 ms delay tolerance compared to ±10–15% for standard pyrotechnic connectors, enabling more accurate control of inter-hole timing for vibration-controlled blasting.

Delay Timing and Blast Design

Surface delay elements are available in a range of delay numbers corresponding to specific delay times — from 25 ms (minimum standard inter-hole delay for fragmentation control) to 10,000 ms (10 seconds, used for long-duration blast sequences or to delay certain rows until previous rows have cleared). In blast design, the inter-hole delay and inter-row delay are selected to control peak particle velocity (PPV) at the nearest sensitive structure (road, building, service) by ensuring that only a limited number of holes fire within any 8 ms window (the standard time window for vibration assessment). High-precision delay elements reduce the uncertainty in timing and allow more holes to be fired per delay number without exceeding PPV limits, increasing blast size for a given vibration limit.

Compatibility and Supply

High-precision surface delay elements are compatible with all standard shock tube signal lines (both high-strength and plastic grades) and standard non-electric blast circuit configurations (trunkline/downline, ring circuit, and row-by-row initiation systems). They connect to incoming trunkline shock tube at the input side and to the hole downline at the output side via J-hook, T-piece, or in-line connector format. As a blasting accessory, delay elements are controlled products requiring appropriate licensing for supply. Terracore Chemicals supplies high-precision delay elements across the available delay range (25–10,000 ms) to licensed mining and blasting operations in South Africa and the SADC region.
